All About the Illinois APCO Historical Collection:

  • Originally conceived to only be a repository for the Illinois APCO Chapter's records. Established 1982 in the Bradley University Library, where it remains today. The first (and still the only) permanently located assemblage of material dedicated to preserving the heritage of APCO and public safety communications in general. Because of its twenty-plus year existence, the depth of the collection, and lacking anything similar, it's widely considered to be APCO-International's official site for the organization's history. Read all about it on the "Introduction" page.

Searching the APCO BULLETIN Articles Database:

  • Use either the "Search" or "Search Tips" page (also available via the top right-hand link on our front page) to query an index for all of APCO's 70-plus years worth of publications (including APCO's first issue). The very most-recent editions may not yet be indexed or available on-line. See the lists of available issues on these pages.
  • For title searches, start with simple queries. Try a single word search and go from there. Title queries also search the keywords. Be aware that your search will return all other words that include the word being queried (a search for "radio" will also return radios, radiology, radioactive, etc.).
  • For an author search, type the person's last name. Don't include ranks or titles (e.g. Chief, Dr., Sgt., etc.) as the database won't respond to such inquiries. If that returns too many articles, try using both first and last names. Although, not all articles were published (and indexed) under the author's full name. Initials, nicknames, or "pen-names" were sometimes used. As with title searches, an author search returns all names that include the query word ("John" returns Johns, Johnson, Littlejohn, etc.).
  • For the year search, enter the full four-digit year. Don't be surprised when you get hundreds and hundreds of matches for the year.
  • Use the "Search Tips" page for information on using Boolean Search capabilities to perform more precise searches, for combining any two or all three of the available search criteria (keywords, author name, and/or a date range), and for other helpful advice.
